Darren T. Kimura – Executive Chairman
Mr. Kimura began his career in the energy industry in 1989 as a Vice President and Project Manager for his family’s electrical contracting firm where he helped to construct the Subaru Astronomical Telescope and Base Facility a $1.3 billion construction project. In 1994 he worked in the EPA Energy Star program and later founded Energy Industries.
Kimura holds numerous patents in energy and is an award winning entrepreneur receiving recognition by Ernst and Young, Pacific Business News as a Top Forty under 40, Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Young Entrepreneur of the Year for California, Nevada, Arizona, and Hawaii, EPA Energy Pioneer of the Year 2005, Technology Leader of the Year 2006, Green Entrepreneur of the Year 2007, and recipient of the Honua Clean Earth award from the Blue Planet Foundation in 2009. He has been named one of the Top 10 for Today by Hawaii Business Magazine in 2010 and a “One to Watch” by Pacific Business News in 2013.
He is a recognized expert in energy efficiency and renewable energy systems and has been a speaker for the US Department of Energy, Hawaiian Electric Company, Maui Electric Company, Hawaii Electric Light Company, the US Environmental Protection Agency, the Guam Energy Office, the Palau Energy Office and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Energy Office. Mr. Kimura has served as the President and Chairman PLASMA (Professional Lighting and Sign Management of America), a co-chairperson for the Hawaii Energy Policy Forum, an Adviser for Hawaiian Electric’s Integrated Resource Plan, and the State of Hawaii’s Department of Business Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) energy management committee. He also served on the State of Hawaii Governor’s Council on Innovation, was on the board of directors for the Hawaii Strategic Development Corporation the State of Hawaii’s venture capital organization and the Boy Scouts of America Aloha Council.
Mr. Kimura received his BA from the University of Hawaii and is a Certified Energy Manager, Certified Demand Side Manager, Certified Cogeneration Professional, Certified Sustainable Energy Professional, and Licensed Hawaii C13 Electrical Contractor.
Mr. Shimada is responsible for EIC’s Administration, Finance and Operations. Previous to joining EIC, he served at Sopogy for 3 years where he was the Vice President of Finance. Before Sopogy he served 5 years at Hoku Corporation where he oversaw numerous key company initiatives such securing over $700 million for the construction of the company’s polysilicon plant in Idaho and participated on the Initial Public Offering to the NASDAQ exchange. Prior to Hoku Corporation, Mr. Shimada worked at MN Capital Partners, an asset management and consulting firm specializing in alternative private equity and real estate investments. Mr. Shimada has a BBA from the University of Hawaii
Mr. Ashimine began in the energy industry in 1989 as an energy engineer at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii working on nuclear submarines. He later transitioned to the nation’s 15th largest mechanical contractor owned by Japan’s Taisei and then joined Hawaiian Electric’s Power Corp. as an energy engineer designing building efficient systems domestically and power plants internationally. Mr. Ashimine joined Energy Industries Corporation as its Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer in 1998. He has since designed such unique energy systems as a combined Photovoltaic and Thermal Energy Ice Storage facility, numerous CHP Cogeneration systems, Ozone Water Treatment systems, and a Flat Plate Solar Collector with Absorption Chiller system.
Mr. Ashimine has been recognized as the State of Hawaii’s Technology Leader of the Year 2007 and received his BS from the University of Hawaii in Mechanical Engineering. He is also a Certified Energy Manager, Certified Demand Side Manager, Certified Cogeneration Specialist, Licensed Hawaii C52 Mechanical Contractor, Certified Project Manager.
Ms. Santana brings a strong background of 15 year experience working in the public and non-profit sectors including construction, government contracting, and law as a certified Public Accountant. Throughout Ms. Santana’s employment, her vast experience includes developing a wide range encompassing accounting auditing, budgeting, and corporate management. She is responsible for and oversees the accounting activities for all of Energy Industries. She received her Bachelors in Accounting from Loyola Marymount University and was previously a Certified Public Accountant in Hawaii and California.
